Dong-A University and Busan City Conduct Health Impact Survey on Residents in High Fine Dust Concentration Areas

Busan Environmental Health Center at Dong-A University Conducts Study on 200 Adults

The Busan Environmental Health Center, operated by Dong-A University (Director: Professor Hong Youngseup), announced on the 3rd that it will conduct a survey to assess the current state of air pollution in Busan and to determine the impact of high concentrations of fine particulate matter on citizens' health.

According to the Environmental Health Center, an analysis of fine particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) data in the Busan area over the three years from 2020 to 2022 showed that the concentration of fine dust was higher in the western region compared to other areas. Following last year, the center will conduct a health impact survey of residents in the Sinpyeong-dong area of Saha-gu, Busan, which is included in the second-highest impact zone for high concentrations of fine dust.

This survey will be conducted for two days starting from the 3rd, targeting approximately 200 adults aged 19 or older who reside in Sinpyeong 1-dong and 2-dong, within a 2km radius of the air monitoring station located in Jangnim-dong, Saha-gu, Busan.

The Environmental Health Center will use questionnaires to assess residents' general characteristics, lifestyle habits, and environmental pollution exposure, and will perform clinical tests to measure physical parameters and blood pressure. In addition, blood and urine tests for general chemical analysis and for measuring harmful heavy metal concentrations in the body will be conducted to establish a fine dust monitoring system in the Busan area.

The Busan Environmental Health Center is working to improve health and welfare by establishing an early surveillance system for environmentally related diseases, conducting research and surveys on environmental health in Busan, and building a 'risk and disaster communication system' with Busan citizens for prevention and education.
