A man in his 50s who collapsed during a police investigation showed symptoms of lower body paralysis. Two police officers involved in the investigation have been placed on administrative leave.
According to the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency on the 3rd, around 1:30 a.m. on the 11th of last month, Mr. A (in his 50s), who was being investigated at Asan Police Station on charges of obstructing official duties, collapsed to the floor and is currently undergoing surgery and treatment for lower body paralysis.
Mr. A had been under investigation after police officers responded to a report that he was lying drunk at a playground in Tangjeong-myeon, Asan City, the previous afternoon, during which he assaulted the officers.
During the investigation, Mr. A suddenly stood up and bent his upper body forward. The police then grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him backward, causing him to fall to the floor.
Immediately after collapsing, Mr. A was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with paralysis of the 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae and underwent surgery. The doctor suggested that the injury may have been caused by the fall to the floor.
Asan Police Station has placed two officers on administrative leave: the officer who pulled Mr. A’s neck and the team leader who neglected supervision. An internal investigation is underway.
The Chungnam Provincial Police Agency has instructed Cheonan Seobuk Police Station to investigate the case to ensure a fair inquiry.
A police official stated, “We are currently reviewing the situation at the time of the incident through CCTV footage and other means. Since Mr. A is undergoing treatment, we will monitor his condition and proceed with the investigation accordingly.”
