Cooperation for Entry into Laos Road Construction Market
Support for Planning Railway Network Linked to Mongolian Mines
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 2nd that it will strengthen cooperation on road and railway infrastructure with Laos and Mongolia through international development cooperation projects (ODA). In Laos, it will provide equipment and technology related to road paving and Korean-style road design standards, and in Mongolia, it will support the establishment of railway network plans linked to mineral resources and Korean-style railway management systems to expand entry into overseas road and railway markets.
The Laos ODA cooperation delegation, composed of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, and the Overseas Construction Association, attended a ceremony on the 28th of last month in Laos to deliver construction material production facilities for road paving and discussed follow-up project discovery. Through the 'Laos Road Construction and Management Infrastructure Self-Reliance Project,' an ODA project of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, road paving inspection equipment will be provided to Laos, where the proportion of unpaved roads is high. Additionally, Korean-style road construction standards are being provided and taught tailored to the Laotian environment to support strengthening Laos's road management capabilities.
This ceremony was an event to provide the Laotian government with road paving construction material plants and compaction equipment developed with domestic companies' technology. The governments of both countries discussed ways to build government-business networks for entry into the Laotian road construction market. They also consulted on key projects of interest to domestic companies, such as Luang Prabang Airport.
The Mongolia ODA cooperation delegation, consisting of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Korea Railroad Corporation, and Korea Transport Institute, held a final report meeting on the 'Mongolia Railway Development Strategy' in Mongolia on the 30th of last month. This project, an ODA initiative of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, supports the establishment of railway network plans connecting major mining hub areas in Mongolia. The Korea Railroad Corporation, Korea Transport Institute, and others formed a consortium to propose Mongolia’s railway network plans linked to mines, route feasibility studies, logistics linkage methods, and public-private partnership (PPP) project models.
Kim Sang-moon, Director of the Construction Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "The Ministry’s land and transport ODA projects have grown from about 3 billion KRW in 2013 to around 30 billion KRW currently. Asia is the second-largest region in cumulative orders and a key ODA cooperation region. Especially in the transportation infrastructure sector, we plan to expand the market entry base by utilizing ODA projects."
