Eyes on the Streets... Busan Autonomous Police Committee Holds 'Banryeogyeon Patrol Unit' Launch Ceremony

Official Patrol Activities Begin at 4 PM on the 1st After Proclamation Ceremony... Crime Prevention and Identifying Citizen Inconveniences

158 Teams Operate in 7 Districts... Voluntary Crime Prevention Units and Police Officers to Patrol Together

Pet owners and their dogs in Busan will become the "eyes on the street," helping to prevent crime and identify inconveniences in citizens' daily lives.

The Busan Metropolitan Police Commission (Chairman Kim Cheoljun) will hold an inauguration ceremony for the "Busan Pet Patrol Unit" at Samnak Ecological Park at 4 p.m. on the 1st.

About 500 people are expected to attend the event, including Chairman Kim Cheoljun, the Chief of Sasang Police Station, representatives from related universities, members of the Pet Patrol Unit, and their families.

This inauguration is organized as a citizen participation program in line with the launch of the 2nd Metropolitan Police Commission.

Main events include: ▲demonstrations of pet agility structures ▲distribution of patrol unit supplies and appointment certificates ▲mock patrol experiences ▲patrol member training (reporting and patrolling procedures) ▲the inauguration ceremony ▲and operation of experience booths.

At the experience booths: ▲three departments related to pet studies will offer experiences such as trying out dog leash handling with stuffed animals, making insect repellents, and free check-ups ▲two companies will provide free grooming and promote dog kindergartens ▲seven district booths will serve as spaces for new and existing patrol members to communicate with each other.

The patrol unit was first piloted in 2022 with 25 teams in Nam-gu and Suyeong-gu, and last year, 150 teams were officially operated in four districts (Nam-gu, Suyeong-gu, Busanjin-gu, Sasang-gu).

As a result, there were 26 reports to 112, 371 reports to 120, and 2,939 patrol activities.

This year, the program has expanded to seven districts (including the previous four, plus Dongnae-gu, Geumjeong-gu, and Haeundae-gu), with 158 teams selected. The newly selected patrol unit will officially begin patrol activities after this inauguration ceremony.

The commission recruited participants from April 18 to May 22, held selection reviews on May 25 and 26, and finalized the teams on May 27.

The selected teams passed all evaluation criteria, including: ▲walking calmly beside their guardian ▲remaining composed in the face of external stimuli ▲and passing by other dogs without reacting.

The commission will cooperate with the six police stations overseeing the patrol areas (Busanjin, Nambu, Sasang, Dongnae, Geumjeong, Haeundae) to provide the new patrol unit with crime prediction data such as patrol routes, and the unit will participate in joint patrols with the voluntary crime prevention corps and police officers.

Additionally, the patrol unit will receive ongoing training as needed.

Kim Cheoljun, Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Commission, stated, "I hope the 'Pet Patrol Unit,' which discovers and reports potential risks in daily life that often go unnoticed, will play a significant role in Busan's safety," adding, "We will continue to develop autonomous police security policies by linking police administration with local government administration."
