Award Ceremony to Be Held at Shilla Hotel on the 31st at 4 PM

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong attended the Samsung Ho-Am Prize Awards Ceremony for the third consecutive year, once again emphasizing his commitment to prioritizing talent.


The Ho-Am Foundation announced that it held the '34th Samsung Ho-Am Prize Awards Ceremony for 2024' at 4 p.m. on the 31st at the Dynasty Hall of the Shilla Hotel in Seoul.


This year's awardees are ▲ Science Prize in Chemistry and Life Sciences: Hye-ran Darwin (55), Professor at New York University, USA ▲ Science Prize in Physics and Mathematics: the late Nam Se-woo (54), Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA ▲ Engineering Prize: Lee Soo-in (44), Professor at the University of Washington, USA ▲ Medicine Prize: Peter Park (53), Professor at Harvard Medical School, USA ▲ Arts Prize: Han Kang (54), Novelist ▲ Social Service Prize: Sister Geraldine Ryan (76). Each awardee received a certificate, a medal, and a prize money of 300 million KRW, totaling 1.8 billion KRW.

The ceremony was held with about 270 attendees, including the awardees' families, acquaintances, related officials, and Samsung executives. Dr. Kimberly Brickman, the spouse of the late Nam Se-woo, accepted the award on his behalf for the Science Prize in Physics and Mathematics.


The event proceeded with greetings from Kim Hwang-sik, Chairman of the Ho-Am Foundation, a judging report by Jin-woo Cheon, Underwood Distinguished Professor at Yonsei University, awards and acceptance speeches by category, and congratulatory remarks by Randy Schekman, Professor at UC Berkeley. The entire event was broadcast live online.


In his greeting, Chairman Kim Hwang-sik said, "It is a great joy and pride to welcome such outstanding individuals as awardees," adding, "This year, female awardees accounted for two-thirds of the total, reaching a record high of four, which is heartening as it reflects another aspect of our society's change and development."


The Samsung Ho-Am Prize was established in 1990 by the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee to honor the spirit of prioritizing talent and social contribution of the founding chairman Ho-Am Lee Byung-chul, recognizing individuals who have made outstanding achievements in academia, arts, social development, and the promotion of human welfare. Up to the 34th awards this year, a total of 176 recipients have been awarded prize money amounting to 34.3 billion KRW.


Chairman Lee Jae-yong has attended the awards ceremony for three consecutive years and continues to uphold the founding philosophy of 'prioritizing talent' and 'coexistence' through donations to the Ho-Am Foundation. By encouraging global talents who have achieved excellence in fields such as science, engineering, and medicine, he carries on the founding philosophy of prioritizing talent and demonstrates a commitment to growing together with society. Additionally, he has shown special interest by personally donating to the Ho-Am Foundation for three consecutive years since 2021, supporting the operation of the Samsung Ho-Am Prize, academic and research projects.
