Production, Processing, Distribution, and Export at Once... Expected to Have a Positive Impact on the Entire Local Community
On the 30th at 3 p.m., Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do held a groundbreaking ceremony for the seafood export complex, which will serve as a key driver of future growth.
According to the city, the ceremony held at the site within the Daeyang General Industrial Complex was attended by Mokpo Mayor Park Hong-ryul, Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok, Deputy Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Song Myung-dal, Mokpo City Council Chairman Moon Cha-bok, Jeollanam-do Assemblyman Jeon Kyung-seon, and about 300 citizens.
The seafood export complex, with facilities worth approximately 120 billion KRW, is expected to attract 36 companies, create employment for over 2,000 people, and generate production effects worth over 200 billion KRW.

This has become an opportunity to emphasize Mokpo’s role as a leading city in the seafood industry.
In his commemorative speech, Mayor Park Hong-ryul stated, “This will be an important opportunity to secure leadership in the global seafood market,” adding, “Through this, Mokpo will become a future food source, a key player in job creation, a new growth engine, and a vanguard for a competitive fishing environment.”
When the facilities are completed in 2026, they will include rental processing factories, an international dried seaweed exchange, research facilities, and export support facilities, establishing a comprehensive system that supports everything from seafood production to processing, distribution, and export.
Particularly, attention is focused on the role of the dried seaweed exchange, expected to serve as a platform for online seaweed trading by establishing standards for seaweed trading?often called the “black semiconductor”?and enhancing transparency in distribution and pricing.
Meanwhile, the groundbreaking ceremony for the seafood export complex is regarded as an important turning point for industrial diversification and regional development in Mokpo.
Local residents have high expectations that the construction of the seafood export complex will not only contribute to Mokpo’s economic development but also have a positive impact on the overall local community.
Going forward, the Mokpo seafood export complex is expected to be completed as planned and provide new business opportunities for small-scale seafood farmers.
