An man in his 80s who killed a debtor and injured his son for not repaying a debt has been brought to trial.
The Criminal Division 3 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Jo Seok-gyu) indicted Choi Mo on the 30th on charges including murder and attempted murder.
Choi is accused of wielding a weapon in the basement first-floor elevator of an apartment in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, where a woman in her 50s, Ms. A, lived on the 7th of this month, killing Ms. A and attempting to kill her son in his 20s who was nearby, but the attempt failed. Ms. A's son sustained injuries requiring eight weeks of medical treatment.
Choi had lent Ms. A approximately 4 billion won and had been urging her to repay the debt since 2019, but she did not repay it, resulting in a heavy interest burden, according to investigations.
According to the prosecution, Choi also visited Ms. A's apartment on the 29th of last month, but believing that Ms. A still did not repay the money and was ignoring him, he committed the crime. After the crime, Choi went to a nearby police station and surrendered himself.
