President Yoon Seok-yeol's Approval Rating Rises by 1 Percentage Point
Lee Jae-myung's Reappointment Deemed Inappropriate by 49%, Han Dong-hoon's Candidacy Deemed Inappropriate by 47%
Overwhelming Public Support for Retirement Age Extension and Related Issues
President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating for his administration remains stuck in the high 20% range. The public showed a negative attitude toward Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, seeking re-election as party leader, and Han Dong-hoon, former emergency committee member, running in the party convention.
According to the National Barometer Survey (NBS) conducted from May 27 to 29 by polling firms Embrain Public, K-Stat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research (telephone interviews using virtual mobile numbers with 1,001 men and women aged 18 and older nationwide), 29% of respondents said President Yoon is doing well in managing state affairs. Meanwhile, 62% responded negatively. Positive ratings rose by 1 percentage point compared to two weeks ago, while negative ratings fell by 2 percentage points.
Before the general election, President Yoon's approval rating was in the high 30% range in the NBS survey (38% in the first week of April), but after the election defeat, it plunged to 27% (third week of April) and has since remained in the high 20% range. Despite events such as the summit meeting and the second anniversary press conference, the approval rating has remained stagnant.
This poll also surveyed public opinion on Lee Jae-myung's re-election as party leader and Han Dong-hoon's candidacy for the party convention. These figures, considered leading presidential candidates for the next election from both ruling and opposition parties, did not receive favorable public opinion regarding their leadership roles.
Regarding Lee Jae-myung's re-election, 39% of respondents said it was appropriate, while 49% said it was inappropriate. Supporters of the Democratic Party and respondents with progressive tendencies were favorable toward Lee's re-election, but centrist and conservative respondents viewed it negatively.
Regarding Han Dong-hoon's candidacy for the party convention, 37% said it was appropriate, while 47% said it was inappropriate. Supporters of the People Power Party and conservatives were favorable toward his candidacy, whereas centrists and progressives responded negatively.
In party support, the People Power Party recorded 30%, the Democratic Party 27%, the Innovation Party for Justice 12%, and the Reform New Party 3%.
Regarding raising the retirement age from the current 60 to 65, 86% of respondents supported the change, while 11% opposed it. Support for extending the retirement age was high across all generations, political party supporters, and ideological orientations. Additionally, raising the age criterion for seniors from 65 to 70 received 59% support and 38% opposition.
On the constitutional amendment for a four-year presidential term with one re-election, 58% agreed, while 36% disagreed.
