Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology Holds 'International Maritime Law Academy Graduation Ceremony'

Expanding the Base of Maritime Law Education in Korea... Held Twice Annually

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Lee Heeseung) held the "2024 International Maritime Law Academy Completion Ceremony" at the Yonsei University Alumni Hall on the 29th.


This academy, hosted by KIOST and organized by the Yonsei University Department of Political Science BK21 Education and Research Group, was attended by over 80 participants including Kim Myungjin, Director of International Cooperation Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Jung Sohyun, Director of International Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yang Heecheol, Director of the KIOST Institute of Maritime Law and Policy, as well as professors, experts, and graduates.


With the support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, KIOST has been holding the International Maritime Law Academy twice a year (first and second half) since 2023 for domestic university (and graduate) students to expand the base of maritime law education in Korea.


This eight-week academy featured lectures on various topics by experts from each field, including Baek Jinhyun, former President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Out of a total of 104 selected students, 63 from 10 universities completed the program.


Yang Heecheol, Director of the KIOST Institute of Maritime Law and Policy, said, "Through the International Maritime Law Academy, we hope that talented individuals in our country will take greater interest in maritime law and maritime territories and grow into experts."


In his congratulatory remarks, Kim Myungjin, Director of International Cooperation Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, emphasized, "Maritime law is not simply a branch of law, but a discipline that deals with national maritime interests," and added, "I hope all participants will maintain their continued interest in maritime law to secure our country's interests amid the rapidly changing maritime order."
