Gochang-gun Conducts 'Safe Korea Drill' to Strengthen Disaster Response Capabilities

Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk announced on the 30th that it conducted the '2024 Safe Korea Drill' to strengthen disaster response capabilities.

Following the declaration of a special disaster area due to heavy rains in 2020 and 2023, the 2024 Safe Korea Drill focused on improving disaster response capabilities against wind and flood damage.

The drill simulated a scenario where Typhoon Buk-sang and heavy rains caused the Gochangcheon River to overflow and the embankment to collapse, flooding the nearby lowland area (Moyang Village).

A public-private joint drill was conducted with the participation of about 200 people, including six related organizations such as the Gochang Fire Station, private organizations, and village residents.

During the Safe Korea Drill for disaster response, the Disaster Safety Communication Network (PS-LTE) was utilized to enable real-time communication between the Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and the disaster site, providing an opportunity to check the overall response system from initial disaster response to recovery.

Exercises were conducted as if in a real situation for the evacuation of vulnerable disaster victims with mobility difficulties among the residents of Moyang Village flooded by the Gochangcheon River overflow, rescue of drowning victims, search for missing persons, and patient transport system in case of medical emergencies.

Additionally, disaster safety education was provided to residents at a temporary shelter set up in the indoor gymnasium, raising awareness of natural disasters and establishing a culture of safety.

County Governor Shim Deok-seop said, “In a situation where the risk of disasters is increasing due to unpredictable climate change such as recent global warming, we will do our best to protect the lives and property of residents from wind and flood disasters such as the upcoming summer monsoon and typhoons by enhancing disaster response capabilities through this Safe Korea Drill.”
