‘Police Officer Assault Allegation’ Sheffler Cleared of Charges

On the 29th (local time), AP News and others reported that Scheffler, who was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer during the major PGA Championship, was cleared of charges and avoided criminal punishment. The Jefferson County Prosecutor's Office in Kentucky requested the judge to dismiss the four charges against Scheffler, which was accepted within 10 minutes.

The prosecution stated, "Based on all the evidence, we cannot proceed with the charges against Scheffler. Scheffler's claim that this was a 'big misunderstanding' is supported by the evidence." The case involving Scheffler's arrest in handcuffs while dealing with a traffic accident officer on the 17th has been legally closed.

At the time, Scheffler was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer who was blocking his entry while he was on his way to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville to participate in the second round of the PGA Championship. He was released after having his 'mugshot' taken at the detention center and was able to compete in the second round, ultimately finishing tied for 8th place in the tournament.

The Louisville police claimed, "Scheffler pushed the officer blocking his entry with his vehicle," but the body camera of the arresting officer was off, so this could not be proven. Scheffler's lawyer said, "The more evidence that comes out, the more it becomes clear that Scheffler was the victim," but also stated, "We will not file a civil lawsuit against the police officer."
