There is public outrage after a story emerged that a dog sent to a dog daycare center returned home having lost one eye due to assault by an employee.
On the 26th, Mr. A posted on his social media account a post titled "Our dog sent to the dog daycare center came back having lost one eye," along with photos and videos.
In the CCTV footage released by Mr. A, a pet kindergarten staff member is seen grabbing and shaking the scruff of the neck of the companion dog Kkung [Photo by Mr. A, Instagram]
Mr. A said, "On the 23rd, our dog Kkung, who went to the dog daycare center, came home trembling with one eye protruding," and recounted that when the family met the dog brought back by the daycare employee and made eye contact, they were so shocked they collapsed. The dog's left eye was bloodied and protruding like a ping-pong ball. Mr. A added, "With its tongue out, breathing heavily and trembling, everything was abnormal," and immediately rushed to the animal hospital.
At the animal hospital, they attempted a procedure to reposition the protruding eye under anesthesia, but it failed because the inside of the eye was already filled with blood. The hospital stated, "It appears to be caused by blunt force, pressure, or a fight between animals. The cornea was already ruptured and aqueous humor was leaking," and recommended enucleation.
Greatly shocked, Mr. A contacted the dog daycare center’s representative to ask for the full story. The daycare explained, "While the dogs were playing in the pickup vehicle, it seems a Welsh Corgi bit the eye." However, Mr. A received an opinion from another hospital introduced by the daycare that "there are no bite marks on Kkung, and it is reasonable to assume physical force as the cause."
After hearing this, Mr. A’s family reviewed all apartment CCTV footage during the pickup times at the daycare throughout May. The CCTV footage from the day of the incident showed a daycare employee hitting the dog with a fist inside the elevator. In the video Mr. A released, a man presumed to be the daycare employee is seen punching the dog’s head inside the elevator and shaking the dog by the scruff with one hand.
Mr. A said, "When I told the daycare representative I wanted to see the CCTV footage, the employee finally confessed," adding, "When Kkung was scared and refused to get off the pickup vehicle, the employee punched the dog’s eye inside the vehicle, causing the eye to rupture. Then, the employee punched the dog’s head again inside the elevator." He continued, "Our usually lively dog who ate well started vomiting after dinner for about a month, curled up in pain, and refused to go for walks. Until then, we never thought the dog was being abused at the daycare," he appealed.
Mr. A explained, "Kkung is currently hospitalized at the animal hospital and is in such poor condition that surgery cannot be performed immediately," and added, "Kkung, who used to love people, is now afraid of them and even avoids recognizing his owner."
Netizens who heard the news expressed anger with comments such as, "If they abuse the dog even in the short time inside the elevator, how much worse must it have been at the daycare?" "My heart breaks," and "The abuser must be severely punished."
Meanwhile, on the 28th, the Jeonju Deokjin Police Station announced that they are investigating employee B of a dog daycare center in Jeonju on suspicion of violating the Animal Protection Act after a complaint was filed alleging dog abuse. The police plan to summon the complainant and others soon to ascertain the facts.
