179 Votes in Favor, 111 Against, 4 Invalid Votes
The Special Prosecutor Appointment Act for the Investigation of Obstruction and Concealment of Facts in the Case of the Fallen Marine, Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act, was rejected in the National Assembly plenary session re-vote on the 28th.
On the afternoon of the 21st and final plenary session of the 21st National Assembly, the re-vote on the Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act resulted in 179 votes in favor, 111 against, and 4 invalid votes out of 294 members present, leading to its rejection. Consequently, the Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act will be automatically discarded.
According to the National Assembly Act, a bill vetoed by the president returns to the National Assembly to be either discarded or re-voted. The approval quorum requires ▲a majority of the total members present and ▲two-thirds or more of the members present.
Although some members of the People Power Party had initially indicated they would defect (vote in favor), it appears they did not affect the outcome. Earlier, the People Power Party decided as a party stance at a members' meeting held before the plenary session to reject the re-vote on the Chaesangbyeong Special Prosecutor Act.
The confrontation between the ruling and opposition parties over the 'Marine Corps Corporal Chae Special Prosecutor (Special Investigation) Act' and the National Pension reform plan is reaching its peak. The atmosphere in the National Assembly on the 28th, when the final plenary session of the 21st National Assembly is scheduled for a re-vote on the 'Corporal Chae Special Prosecutor Act,' is tense.
