The suburban mansion in Chicago, USA, which served as the setting for the movie Home Alone (1990), has been listed on the real estate market.
On the 27th (local time), US ABC News and others reported that the mansion featured as the home of the main character Kevin McCallister's family in Home Alone was recently posted on a real estate listing site for $5.25 million (approximately 7.158 billion KRW). The house is located in the Winnetka area, a northeastern city in Illinois, one of the most expensive housing markets in the United States.
According to the listing description on the site managed by the brokerage firm Dawn McKenna Group, the house covers 9,126 square feet (847.8㎡) and includes 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. Built in 1921, it underwent extensive renovation and expansion in 2018, and inside there is a gymnasium that can be used as a basketball court as well as a small movie theater facility.
The agency introduced the property by saying, "This brick mansion, famous from Home Alone, offers a rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic movie houses in American popular culture."
Earlier, in December last year, The New York Times (NYT) reported that "the Kevin family in the movie belongs to the wealthy top 1%." According to economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, at the time the movie was released in 1990, Kevin’s house was a residence only affordable to the top 1% of Chicago household incomes, and that remains unchanged today.
In the movie, the 8-year-old youngest son Kevin spends Christmas alone in this house and fends off a duo of burglars. The mansion’s exterior, now listed for sale, appears several times in the film. Although more than 30 years have passed since the movie’s release, tourists still frequently visit to view the house from afar and take commemorative photos. However, the US entertainment media TMZ quoted the film’s cinematographer saying that the scenes depicting the interior of the house were not filmed inside this mansion.
Meanwhile, the 1990 classic Home Alone continues to be loved as a representative Christmas movie even after 30 years.
