Bold Support Measures to Be Established for the Development of the Space Launch Vehicle Industry
Goheung County, a hub city for aerospace (Governor Gong Young-min), welcomed the opening of the Korea Aerospace Agency, known as the Korean version of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), on the 27th in Sacheon City, Gyeongnam Province. The agency will serve as the overall coordinator and control tower in the aerospace sector.
The Korea Aerospace Agency is the central institution that will usher in Korea's full-fledged new space era and realize the space economy roadmap to leap into the world's top five space powers by 2045. It was launched after the "Korea Aerospace Agency Special Act" passed the National Assembly plenary session on January 9.
Gong Young-min, Governor of Goheung County, said, "As one of the three pillars of the aerospace industry cluster, we sincerely congratulate and welcome the opening of the Korea Aerospace Agency together with the 60,000 residents of Goheung County and 700,000 expatriate compatriots, especially since Goheung County was designated as a launch vehicle specialized zone in December 2022."
He added, "The creation of the space launch vehicle industry cluster is a core industry responsible for the future food source for the next 100 years and also addresses local extinction. We will prepare thoroughly to ensure the prompt establishment of the national space launch vehicle industrial complex, which is being promoted with preliminary feasibility study exemption, and successfully build private launch sites, combustion test sites, and launch vehicle technology commercialization centers."
Furthermore, to create synergy effects through fostering the space launch vehicle industry and concentrating companies, he stated, "We will provide bold support measures for resident companies and improve accessibility and living conditions," and added, "We will actively support the establishment of an innovation infrastructure for industry-academia-research-government collaboration in space development so that Goheung County can become the base of Korea's space industry."
