Pukyong National University Research Institute Wins Top Prize at Korean Society of Fisheries Science Conference, Achieving Double Honors

University-Focused Research Institutes Designated by the Ministry of Education Continue to Phase 2 Projects

Marine Bionics Convergence Technology Center Achieves Successive Research Results

Researchers from the Marine Bionics Convergence Technology Center at Pukyong National University (Director: Jung Wonkyu) have reported on the 27th that they achieved double honors, including winning the grand prize at the ‘2024 Korean Society of Fisheries Science Conference’.

This center, designated by the Ministry of Education as a university-focused research institute in science and engineering, recently saw its team of researchers?Kim Namgyun, Park Dongju, Moon Seunghee, and Lee Junhyeong?win the grand prize in the graduate student team category at the ‘Idea Contest for Field Practice-Based Problem Solving’ held at Mokpo National University. Their research, ‘Development of Eco-friendly Silver Nanoparticles Using Seaweed-Derived Phlorotannin’ (supervising professor: Jung Wonkyu), was recognized for this achievement.

The team received the highest evaluation by presenting a drug delivery system utilizing eco-friendly synthesis as a strategy to solve challenges in the development of pharmaceuticals using marine natural products and to foster growth in the marine bio sector.

Additionally, at the same conference, researcher Kim Namgyun (2nd year doctoral program) received the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for his research, ‘Synthesis and Physiological Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Using Shells’ (supervising professor: Jung Wonkyu), which proposed a sustainable drug delivery system by optimizing the synthesis method and investigating the excellent physiological activities of shell-based silver nanoparticles.

Furthermore, researcher Cho Jeongbin (2nd year master's program) was awarded the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for his research, ‘Analysis of Microbial Community Changes in Mackerel by Combined Treatment of Rosemary Extract and Lactic Acid Bacteria Supernatant’ (supervising professor: Kim Youngmok), which evaluated the impact of storage period and treatment with rosemary extract and lactic acid bacteria supernatant on the microbial community of mackerel, suggesting a novel approach to extending the shelf life of mackerel.

In addition, researcher Choi Jihwan (2nd year master's program) also won the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for his research, ‘Metabolic Changes in Red Meat by Lactic Acid Bacteria Supernatant Treatment’ (supervising professor: Kim Youngmok), which identified key biomarkers related to discoloration prevention through metabolic analysis of tuna red meat treated with lactic acid bacteria supernatant.

Since being selected for the first phase of the University-Focused Research Institute Support Project in 2021, the Marine Bionics Convergence Technology Center at Pukyong National University has been recognized for its excellent research achievements and was selected for the second phase continuation project this year. The center is striving to develop core technologies in marine convergence biomedical fields and nurture professional talent, leading the nation’s advanced marine new industries.
