Chosun University announced that 65 students enrolled in the liberal arts course "Global Citizenship Education in the Era of Multiculturalism" (taught by Professor Han Sang-ok of the Department of Asian Language and Culture) conducted a class exploring the Koryoin Village, known as the "Historical Village No. 1," where about 7,000 Koryo-saram settled in Gwangju, the ancestral land, carrying the Korean Dream.
The course "Global Citizenship Education in the Era of Multiculturalism" was selected as a 2024 Global Citizenship Education Lecture Support University by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (Director Lim Hyun-mook). It is planned and conducted to cultivate global citizenship awareness that understands and respects cultural diversity.
The students listened to explanations about the migration history, daily life, and anti-Japanese independence movement of the Koryo-saram from Kim Byung-hak, director of the Wolgok Koryoin Culture Center "Gyeol," and watched a one-person musical performance titled "Who Am I?" by village guide Song Ju-young. They also visited village-affiliated institutions such as the Koryoin Comprehensive Support Center, Baramgaebi Dream Public Regional Children's Center, Moon Viktor Art Museum, and GBS Koryo Broadcasting Station, guided by Dalbit Village guides including Jeong Jin-sang, and visited Hong Beom-do Park.
Professor Han Sang-ok expressed hope that this exploration would serve as an opportunity for students to recognize "the independence movement history and patriotic spirit of the forgotten Koryo-saram ancestors, as well as the hardships faced by Koryo-saram compatriots returning to Korea." He added, "We will continue to conduct global citizenship education to cultivate the qualities and competencies needed in a multicultural society."
