An Era Where Discarded Coffee Grounds Become Profitable... Transforming into Eco-Friendly Deodorizers

Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) is attracting attention for operating a unique job program for seniors.

Every year, the district creates jobs such as cleaning managers, school zone traffic safety volunteers, and senior baristas to support the active social participation of seniors.

One of the institutions dedicated to these senior jobs, Jungnang Senior Club, operates the "Coffee Grounds Upcycling Project Team." The "Coffee Grounds Upcycling Project Team" (hereafter, the Project Team) produces deodorants using discarded coffee grounds.

Coffee grounds are the leftover parts of coffee beans after making coffee. The Project Team collects coffee grounds discarded from local coffee shops and transforms them into eco-friendly deodorants through a processing procedure. The produced deodorants are distributed free of charge to vulnerable groups and local residents.

In particular, this month, the team produced about 1,500 deodorants and delivered them to seniors at local welfare centers on the 16th and 17th.

A senior participating in the Project Team expressed pride, saying, "Although the income is small, through this activity, I can help local residents and protect the environment at the same time, which makes it a very meaningful activity."

District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi said, "This is a meaningful activity that allows seniors to interact with neighbors and practice environmental protection simultaneously, achieving two goals at once. We will continue to do our best to develop various policies that support seniors' healthy and active later years."
