One Army Trainee Dies During Military Discipline Training

An Army recruit collapsed during military discipline training and was transferred to a civilian hospital but died two days later.

According to the Army on the 26th, a recruit collapsed while undergoing military discipline training at a unit in Inje, Gangwon Province, around 5:20 PM on the 23rd.

The recruit was urgently transported to a civilian hospital for treatment but his condition worsened, and he passed away on the afternoon of the 25th.

Military discipline training refers to physical training and mental conditioning instructed by commanders to establish military discipline according to regulations and procedures. It was commonly called 'Eolcharyeo,' but in 2020, with the enactment of the revised Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Status and Service of Military Personnel, which included the purpose and intent of military discipline training, the term 'military discipline training' became established.

The Army stated, "We are conducting a thorough investigation into the exact cause and circumstances of the accident, including whether the military discipline training was conducted in accordance with regulations and procedures, together with civilian police."

They added, "We pray for the deceased's soul and sincerely extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. We will wholeheartedly provide active support for all necessary matters from the family's perspective."

Previously, on the 21st, an incident occurred at the Army's 32nd Division Recruit Training Center where a grenade exploded during training, resulting in the death of one recruit and injuries to a platoon leader.
