Lee Jae-myung's Negative Stance on Accepting a 44% Income Replacement Rate
On the 25th, the Presidential Office expressed a negative stance regarding Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung's demand to pass the National Pension reform bill in the 21st National Assembly, stating, "Rather than rushing to a hasty decision due to time constraints, let's make a decision that fully reflects the opinions of the entire nation, especially those of the younger generation."
On the same day, Lee held an emergency press briefing at the National Assembly in the afternoon, saying, "This is something that must be done, but since there is no time, the Democratic Party will inevitably make all concessions," and added, "We will fully accept the ruling party's proposed income replacement rate of 44%."
A senior official from the Presidential Office explained, "While the decision on the premium rate and income replacement rate figures is important, the process and procedure of reaching a grand compromise that democratically reflects the will of all citizens regarding the National Pension is also very important," adding, "This is because the pension issue has a significant impact on all citizens and their lives."
In particular, the official stated, "This issue has an enormous impact on the youth and future generations rather than the current generation," and continued, "Therefore, rather than rushing to a hasty decision due to time pressure, the ruling and opposition parties should make a decision that sufficiently reflects the opinions of the entire nation, especially those of the younger generation."
He added, "This does not mean to drag things out," and said, "Since Leader Lee has already expressed his willingness to concede by accepting the ruling party's proposal, it should not take that long to form a national consensus."
