LA Dodgers Ohtani Shohei Secures Local Newlywed Home

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles (LA) Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB), known as the "Man of 1 Trillion Won," is reported to have purchased a luxury mansion as his newlywed home locally. On the 22nd (local time), the LA Times reported, "Ohtani recently bought a mansion in La Ca?ada Flintridge, an upscale residential area in LA, for $7.85 million (about 10.7 billion won)." While it is a luxury mansion by ordinary standards, considering Ohtani's income, some evaluations describe it as "modest."

According to the real estate platform Realtor.com, the mansion was built in 2013 and has a total area of 7,327 square feet (about 206 pyeong), with a lot size of nearly 1 acre (about 1,224 pyeong). It is a three-story building with five bedrooms, six bathrooms, indoor and outdoor living rooms, a home theater, sauna, gym, hot spring bathtub, and a basketball court. Ohtani attracted attention earlier this year when he announced his marriage to former basketball player Mimiko Tanaka in February.
Ohtani chose a relatively quiet area rather than wealthy neighborhoods like Hidden Hills, Beverly Hills, or Malibu. The mansion was listed for $8.99 million (about 12.3 billion won) last June when comedian Adam Carolla put it on the market, but Ohtani purchased it for $7.85 million, about 13% lower. This is the second-highest price among properties sold in La Ca?ada Flintridge over the past six months, following a $10.7 million sale. Nearby residents reportedly include Hollywood actors such as Donald Glover, Mario Lopez, Topher Grace, and Angela Bassett.
After leaving the LA Angels last December, Ohtani made headlines by signing a 10-year, $700 million (about 930 billion won) contract with the LA Dodgers, the largest total amount in world sports history. Including prize money and advertising revenue, his value is estimated to be at least 1 trillion won.
Despite this, Ohtani's frugal lifestyle has been revealed several times, earning public favor. A Japanese magazine in 2018 disclosed details of Ohtani's private life, stating, "His commuting vehicle is a Korean-made sedan costing only 2 million yen (about 17.84 million won)." The vehicle was personally chosen by Ohtani, and although the team suggested, "Wouldn't a bigger and sturdier car be better?" he declined. Ohtani's wife also showed frugality by carrying a bag costing only 5,000 yen (about 44,500 won). Domestic netizens responded, saying, "Considering Ohtani's value, annual income, and advertising revenue, it is modest."
