Jokgu, South Korea's representative 'national' sport, is set to heat up 'West Busan' this weekend.
The so-called four-player 'K-sports' ball competition will take place in Sasang-gu and Saha-gu, Busan. Two tournaments?the 8th Sasang-gu Office Chief's Cup Jokgu Tournament and the 18th Saha-gu Jokgu Association President's Invitational Jokgu Tournament?will be held on the 26th.
The Sasang-gu Office Chief's Cup will kick off at 8 a.m. at the riverside jokgu court next to Renecite in Sasang-gu, hosted by the Sasang-gu Office. The event is organized by the Sasang-gu Sports Council and the Sasang-gu Jokgu Association.
Centered around clubs from Sasang-gu, more than 20 clubs from across Busan will field over 50 teams to compete for supremacy. Around 300 jokgu enthusiasts will showcase their skills in three divisions (Local 1, Local 2, 60s) as they vie for the title.
Jang Deoksu, game director of the Sasang-gu Jokgu Association, said, "We are preparing this tournament to promote friendship and camaraderie among jokgu enthusiasts and to broaden the base of recreational sports."
Park Myungsik, president of the Sasang Jokgu Association, added, "I hope everyone enjoys the fun of sweating and showing their skills along the Nakdong River, while also taking home laughter and health."
On the same day, another major recreational sports event will take place at Eulsukdo, the land of migratory birds. The 18th Saha-gu Jokgu Association President's Invitational Jokgu Tournament will be held at the Eulsukdo International Soccer Field in Hadan-dong, Saha-gu.
Hosted and organized by the Saha-gu Jokgu Association, with support from the Saha-gu Office, Saha-gu Sports Council, and Busan Jokgu Association, the competition will feature five divisions.
Focusing on Saha-gu, more than 30 clubs will field over 40 teams, with around 300 participants competing in five divisions: J3·J4 Busan Integrated Division, Busan J5, Busan 60s, Saha J6, and Saha 50s.
Jang Heeuk, secretary general of the Busan Jokgu Association, introduced the event as "a prestigious tournament that has played a major role in the development of recreational jokgu," and added, "I hope everyone gives their all on the vast field to win trophies and prize money." Yoon Byungkyu, game director, emphasized, "We are holding various tournaments and events to make Busan the mecca of jokgu."
Park Samcheol, president of the Busan Jokgu Association, said, "These two tournaments, which will serve as a stage for the development of jokgu?a national ball game and a K-sport reaching out to the world?and for the unity of enthusiasts, are awaiting the weekend," adding, "Watching jokgu matches filled with fighting spirit will also be a great way to enjoy yourself."
