On this day, LG AI Research Institute and UNESCO agreed to form an advisory group of international experts within the year and begin developing AI ethics education courses, aiming for public release by the end of 2025. Through this agreement, UNESCO plans to intensify collaboration with LG, a key partner in AI education, based on the 'AI Ethics Recommendation,' the first international standard for the ethical use of AI.
In particular, the collaboration between LG AI Research Institute and UNESCO is significant as a practical move to implement the key agendas of the AI Seoul Summit, namely 'safety' and 'inclusion.' The educational program content jointly developed by LG AI Research Institute and UNESCO will be provided free of charge through UNESCO’s AI Ethics and Governance platform (Global AI Ethics and Governance Observatory). Additionally, to compose educational programs applicable in industry and policy fields, they plan to solicit AI ethics practice cases from stakeholders including governments, companies, academia, and civil society worldwide, and select outstanding cases.
Kim Suhyun, Director of UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Regional Office, said, "UNESCO and LG AI Research Institute will not only develop the courses together but also foster a global community for the ethical practice of AI. This project will play a pivotal role in promoting responsible development and deployment of AI technologies and creating a culture of ethical innovation that transcends geographical and sectoral boundaries."
Bae Kyunghoon, Director of LG AI Research Institute, emphasized, "To ensure AI safety, it is necessary to enhance the ethical awareness of those researching AI and formulating policies." He added, "We hope this MOOC project will contribute to strengthening the AI ethics capabilities of AI experts and policymakers worldwide."
Last November, LG AI Research Institute became the first domestic company to sign an agreement with UNESCO to implement and spread AI ethics, and in February this year, it was the only domestic company to participate in the 'UNESCO AI Ethics Global Forum' held in Slovenia.
Starting with this project, LG AI Research Institute and UNESCO plan to jointly host international events and forums in the future and engage in activities to raise awareness of the AI Ethics Recommendation, including discussions on developing initiatives.
