On the 23rd, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who is likely to be appointed White House Chief of Staff if former President Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidential election scheduled for this November, met with major business leaders from South Korea.
The Korea Economic Association (KEA) announced that on the same morning, it held a breakfast meeting at the FKI Tower Conference Center in Yeouido, Seoul, with former Speaker McCarthy, who is visiting Korea, and about 20 key executives from various domestic major companies including SK, Hyundai Motor, LG, Hanwha, LS, CJ, Mirae Asset, Shinsegae Food, and SPC.
Former Speaker McCarthy and Korean business leaders exchanged views on key issues such as strengthening economic cooperation between South Korea and the U.S., Korean companies' investments in the U.S., and exports to the U.S.
Former Speaker McCarthy is regarded as one of the most pro-Korea lawmakers in the U.S. Congress. He is also known for having led Republican support behind the scenes during the conclusion of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Notably, he supported former President Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and is classified as a key figure in the Trump campaign for this election as well. For this reason, he is considered a leading candidate for White House Chief of Staff if former President Trump is elected.
Ryu Jin, chairman of KEA, emphasized in his opening remarks, "Ahead of the U.S. presidential election, deep dialogue between the Korean business community and U.S. opinion leaders is urgently needed," adding, "The U.S. is South Korea's largest investor and largest export market, and South Korea's direct investment in the U.S. has greatly contributed to job creation within the United States."
