By July, 7 elementary and middle schools in the region, with about 1,300 students, will experience the educational value of music through textbook classical music appreciation, learning conducting and ballet mime, and comparing dance pieces in daily life
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will operate the "Exciting Music Journey Visiting Schools" program until July. This event is designed to allow youth to experience the educational value of music.
This program is part of the 2024 Yongsan Future Education District project. A chamber music ensemble composed of string ensembles from the professional arts group Grand Philharmonic Orchestra, ballerinas, and instrumental soloists will perform a variety of music including classical pieces from textbooks, children's songs, and animation OSTs.
A district official explained, "Performances usually involve interaction between the stage and the audience, and this will be a special time where students can enjoy the performance together with their peers rather than guardians."
Students can enjoy the performance for 60 minutes in their school auditorium, accompanied by easy and fun explanations from the orchestra conductor.
The string and woodwind ensemble of eight members will perform Boccherini's Minuet, Johann Strauss II's Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, Beethoven's Ode to Joy, Ennio Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe, and The Swan from Carnival of the Animals.
Along with music appreciation, students will learn about the structure and history of instruments, listening skills, comparisons of various dance pieces in daily life, performance techniques, conducting methods, and will experience ballet mime to express music through movement.
In particular, the program includes a fun segment where students who wish can perform the Chopsticks March on stage or sing familiar songs like Let It Go and Cotton Candy together, enhancing the enjoyment of the performance.
The district is conducting the program for about 1,300 students from 24 elementary and middle schools in the area that applied in March. The program will visit schools in the following order: ▲Cheongpa Elementary (April 16) ▲Bokwang Elementary (May 13) ▲Sinyongsan Elementary (May 14) ▲Yongam Elementary (May 22) ▲Samgwang Elementary (May 27) ▲Shingwang Elementary (May 30) ▲Boseong Girls' Middle School (July 18).
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "By singing and enjoying together, classical music that once felt unfamiliar will become more comfortable," adding, "I hope children grow into talented individuals with rich artistic sensitivity who enjoy culture and the arts."
