May 25-26 Hongdae Red Road R1, 25 Famous Food Streets and Shopping Districts in Mapo-gu Gathered in One Place
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, "Focusing on Revitalizing Local Commercial Areas by Creating Specialized Streets in Every Corner of the Alley"
This weekend, the ‘Mapo Alley Market Boom Festival’ to revitalize traditional markets and alleyway commercial districts in Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) will be held for the first time this year at Hongdae Red Road R1 (Meeting Plaza).
This festival is dedicated to the local alleyway commercial districts and small business owners who are facing a serious crisis due to the recent economic downturn and reduced consumer spending. A total of 25 organizations representing Mapo-gu’s traditional markets, shopping districts, and publishing and design companies will participate.
The festival will take place on the 25th and 26th from 2 PM to 9 PM, featuring ▲Mapo Gourmet (美食) Zone ▲Taste Street Promotion Zone ▲Design Goods Sales Zone ▲Event Experience Zone.
The ‘Boom Festival’ gathers Mapo’s famous foods all in one place. Representative dishes include pork ribs and jumulleok (marinated grilled pork) from Yonggang-dong shopping district, jokbal (pig’s trotters) and bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) from Mapo Gongdeok Market, and grilled galmaegisal (skirt meat) from Dohwa-dong shopping district. The food alleys of Hapjeong-dong, the Hongdae Walking Street, and the food offerings of Mangwon and Ahyeon Markets are also proud highlights not to be missed.
After filling up with Mapo’s signature foods, visitors can enjoy browsing design goods from stores that fully capture the unique character of Mapo-gu, such as the ‘Haneulgil’ shops in Hapjeong-dong, small business shops in Hongdae, and alley-type shops on Bangulnaegil.
At 4 PM on the 25th, a roulette game called ‘Catch Your Luck’ hosted by broadcaster Jo Young-gu will take place, along with food interviews.
Additionally, throughout the festival site, a ‘Mapo Taste Map’ and photo zones introducing Mapo-gu’s representative food streets, distinctive shopping districts, and tourist attractions will be installed to showcase the diverse charms of Mapo to visitors of Red Road.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Mapo-gu is creating hot places that tell stories fitting the local characteristics, including Hongdae Red Road, Hapjeong-dong’s ‘Haneulgil’, Yeonnam-dong’s ‘Kkirikkiri-gil’, and the under-construction ‘Kkotgil’ in Dohwa-dong. We will continue to work hard so that every corner of the region becomes known as a representative commercial district of Korea.”
