Implementation of the '2024 Comprehensive Heatwave Measures' from May 20 to September 30... Establishment of Response System by Crisis Level
Active Operation of Heatwave Mitigation Facilities such as Cooling Centers, Cooling Fogs, and Shade Tents
More Thorough Protection Measures Prepared in Response to Increasing Summer Temperatures Every Year
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has prepared the "2024 Comprehensive Heatwave Countermeasures" to prevent disasters caused by summer heatwaves and will actively implement them for about four months from May 20 to September 30.
The district has established a response system according to crisis levels to perfectly protect residents from heatwave disasters caused by rising summer temperatures every year. Through cooperation with relevant departments, it has prepared practical measures to ensure thorough protection without gaps.
Even during normal times, the Heatwave Situation Management TF team continuously monitors weather conditions and plans to minimize damage through ▲ promotion of safety measures for outdoor workers ▲ strengthening protection measures for heatwave-vulnerable groups ▲ enhancing publicity and dissemination of action guidelines and special weather reports ▲ installation and operation of heatwave reduction facilities ▲ road water cleaning to alleviate the heat island effect.
First, to quickly deliver heatwave information, the district has established a "Disaster Helper" delivery system in cooperation with local residents such as community leaders and voluntary disaster prevention groups, strengthening visits and phone check-ins for vulnerable groups and promoting action guidelines.
In addition, the district operates a total of 183 heatwave reduction facilities such as shade shelters and cooling fogs, 4 water play facilities, and 19 water playgrounds to reduce heat. When a heatwave special report is issued, road water cleaning is conducted during heatwave hours to alleviate the heat island phenomenon.
Furthermore, safety education is provided to outdoor workers at construction sites to strengthen supervision, and safety inspections are conducted at construction sites and gas supply facilities within the district to fully manage vulnerable facilities.
In particular, this year, the district plans to operate a total of 193 cooling shelters for heatwave-vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone, homeless people, and residents of jjokbang (small rooms), including 18 community centers, 18 small libraries, 144 senior centers, 4 welfare centers and facilities, 4 safety lodgings, and 5 homeless shelters.
Additionally, special protection measures for heatwave-vulnerable groups include ▲ elderly safety management solutions (IOT), ▲ meal provision and welfare checks for elderly at risk of malnutrition, ▲ fan support projects, ▲ cooling cost support for local children's centers, and ▲ special duty for protecting homeless and jjokbang residents.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, "We will do our best to prevent disasters by implementing practical heatwave countermeasures in preparation for the upcoming heat. We will pay more attention to safety inspections so that residents can enjoy outdoor activities with peace of mind, and especially considering the rising summer temperatures, we will establish a protection system for heatwave-vulnerable groups such as the elderly."
