The Jeonnam Provincial Council has proposed to the government a policy decision regarding the establishment of a new national medical school in Jeonnam.

On the 21st, the council requested, "For the establishment of a medical school in the Jeonnam region, which is the only area nationwide without a medical school, the government should decide and announce the policy on the admission quota of 200 students for the new Jeonnam National Medical School for the 2026 academic year in the university admission plan to be finalized in May."

Last month on the 19th, the government announced through a briefing by the Prime Minister that the university admission guidelines for May would be finalized up to the 2026 university admission plan, and tentatively set the autonomous recruitment quota for each medical school for the 2025 academic year at around 1,500 students.

Jeonnam Province plans to allocate the admission quota for the new medical school in 2026, considering a surplus quota of about 500 students from the total increase of 2,000 medical school seats. Following the government's request, it intends to focus on gathering public opinion and selecting the university so that recommendations can be made around September to October.

The Provincial Council stated, "The establishment quota for the new Jeonnam National Medical School should be reviewed simultaneously during the government's process of increasing medical school quotas," and added, "Together with Jeonnam Province, we will rationally and fairly carry out all processes, including building a complete regional medical system, securing the health rights of all residents, promoting regional co-prosperity, and entrusting tasks to credible institutions or large consulting firms."
