Focus on 6 Battleground States, 20 Billion Won Concentrated Support
Traditional Biden Supporters Like Black and Muslim Communities Drift Away
Trump Gains Reflex Benefits but Final Outcome Remains Uncertain
The largest LGBTQ organization in the United States has expressed support for President Biden in the upcoming U.S. presidential election this November. This move is seen as a relief for President Biden, who has recently been struggling with the loss of support from young people, people of color, and Muslims.
According to NBC News on the 20th (local time), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest LGBTQ organization in the U.S., plans to donate $15 million (approximately 20.4 billion KRW) to support President Biden's reelection bid. The organization intends to focus its efforts on six battleground states?Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada?by running political advertisements, hiring staff, and organizing support rallies and events.
The decision for such full-scale support stems from analyses showing that President Biden is currently showing precarious signs among the overall swing voter base ahead of a rematch with former President Donald Trump. HRC estimates that there are 75 million so-called "Equality Voters" who consider LGBTQ rights when choosing their candidate in this election. However, one-third of these voters are currently not firmly supporting President Biden, and hundreds of thousands are reportedly skeptical of his policies.
Kelly Robinson, Chair of HRC, pointed out, "When analyzed by state, the votes of these voters are decisive in the outcome." She added, "President Biden won Arizona, a battleground state, by just 10,000 votes in the last election, where 1.4 million Equality Voters reside." She further emphasized, "They are a powerful group, and it is important for us to get them to the polls."
This endorsement from the LGBTQ organization comes at a time when President Biden is facing red flags on his path to reelection due to the loss of support from his traditional base. Recent polls by Bloomberg News and Morning Consult show that Biden's support among Black voters in battleground states is at 63%. Considering that 92% of Black voters supported Biden in the 2020 election, this indicates a clear erosion of support. In response, President Biden has been making efforts to win back Black voters, including delivering a commencement speech at the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr.
Meanwhile, former President Trump, who is leading in five of the six battleground states, appears to be benefiting from the defection of Muslim voters from Biden's camp. According to a recent poll conducted by The New York Times (NYT) and Siena College in five key battleground states, Trump leads Biden among Arab and Muslim voters by 57% to 25%. However, given Trump's past record of restricting Muslim immigration and his strong support for Israel on the Palestinian issue, it is considered premature to predict the final direction of his support among these voters.
