Reducing Labor and Increasing Harvest through Labor-Saving Pest and Disease Control
Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do recently held an annual meeting for a pilot project on seedling tray drench treatment targeting local farms.
According to the county on the 21st, the meeting was held at the Jindo-gun Agricultural Technology Center with about 110 participants including farmers and related personnel. It proceeded with training on seedling tray drench treatment techniques, on-site demonstrations, and a Q&A session.
Seedling tray drench treatment is a new agricultural technique for controlling rice pests and diseases. It involves diluting insecticides, fungicides, and crop activators in 10 liters of water and spraying them on seedling trays (20 to 30 seedling boxes per 10a) 1 to 3 days before transplanting, which is 1 to 2 days before transplanting. A single treatment provides pest and disease control effects lasting for 100 days.
Recently, abnormal weather patterns and increased densities of specific pests and diseases have been observed. Jindo is a region where rice planthoppers and rice stem borers arrive first, carried by low-pressure air currents, so neglecting pest and disease control can cause significant damage.
The county is actively promoting pest and disease control by investing 370 million KRW in the drench treatment pilot project, covering 823 hectares, which is the fourth largest project scale in Jeollanam-do.
A farmer who attended the meeting praised, “Using seedling tray drench treatment prevented pest and disease damage compared to other farms and increased the harvest yield, so I applied for the drench treatment project again this year. The training received at the Agricultural Technology Center was a great help for the tough farming.”
Park Gye-cheon, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “We will continue to take the lead in producing high-quality local rice through thorough pre-monitoring of pests and diseases and prompt information provision.”
