The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office has officially started operating the Flood Control Situation Room during this year's natural disaster response period.
This summer's weather forecast predicts an increase in the frequency of localized heavy rainfall and typhoons due to atmospheric instability and rising average water temperatures.
Accordingly, the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office announced that it will conduct emergency duty classified into four stages?interest, caution, alert, and severe?based on weather and flood conditions.
So far, joint inspections before the flood season, flood response workshops, and flood preparedness drills have been conducted, and a cooperation system with related agencies has been established to implement field-centered flood response.
Additionally, 1,119 CCTVs have been installed at 373 points along national rivers within the jurisdiction, and 183 more are being installed at 61 points on rivers scheduled for national river designation (Hwangryonggang, Suncheon Dongcheon, Osucheon).
Through this, it was announced that river conditions will be communicated and information shared with local governments, police stations, and related agencies, enabling rapid evacuation of residents and on-site control.
In the event of flood damage, emergency restoration companies will be designated for each water system and section to secure the golden time and support prompt recovery on site.
Furthermore, if necessary, a system will be established to allow joint use of materials and equipment among related agencies to ensure thorough protection of the lives and property of the public.
Park Yeon-jae, head of the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, stated, "As extreme heavy rains caused by recent abnormal climate are expected to occur frequently, we will do our best to ensure the safety of the public by establishing a close cooperation system with related agencies."
