The Presidential Office announced on the 20th that Korea will lay the groundwork to leap into the AI major three countries (G3) through the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Seoul Summit' jointly hosted by the Korean and British governments on the 21st and 22nd.

Park Sang-wook, Chief of Science and Technology at the Presidential Office, said in a briefing with reporters at the Yongsan Presidential Office briefing room that afternoon, "Through the global leadership of digital AI norms secured at this summit, we expect our country to enhance its global influence as a leading AI nation and establish a foundation to advance as an AI G3 country."

Earlier, President Yoon Suk-yeol and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated in an op-ed related to this summit, "AI holds great potential to improve people's quality of life, such as in disease treatment and climate change response," and "Korea and the UK have decided to utilize this potential of AI technology to create a better world."

They also presented three principles to fully realize AI potential: 'Innovation, Safety, and Inclusiveness.'

Chief Park explained, "Through this meeting, we plan to strengthen global cooperation on AI safety and urge companies to participate in efforts for safety," adding, "We will also discuss ways to foster a free and open AI innovation ecosystem while building consensus on AI innovation."

He continued, "We will emphasize efforts to bridge AI and digital divides between classes and countries and discuss ways to pass on sustainable AI to future generations," noting, "The results of these discussions will be included in the summit declaration and announced; currently, wording consultations are underway among participating countries."

On the 22nd, a ministerial session and a global forum will be held at the AI summit. At the global forum, governments, companies, civil society, and experts from various countries will advance governance-building measures centered on safety, innovation, and inclusiveness. The summit sessions will also focus on discussing AI risks.

Similar to the AI summit held in the UK last November, G7 leaders and the leaders of Singapore and Australia were invited to this summit. In addition, heads of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as well as key AI industry companies including Samsung, Naver, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, will attend.

China will not attend the summit session but will participate only in the ministerial session. A Presidential Office official explained the reason for not inviting China to the summit session, saying, "The invitation was discussed mainly among those who attended last year's summit held by the UK at Bletchley Park."

Wang Yoon-jong, Third Deputy Director of the National Security Office, said, "If last year's UK-hosted summit focused on AI safety, this meeting will expand to include innovation and inclusiveness beyond safety," adding, "We expect discussions to comprehensively cover not only AI risks but also positive aspects and benefits that can contribute to human society."
