Wando Coast Guard Conducts Free Inspections to Prevent Leisure Equipment Safety Accidents

At the new port in Wando-gun, for advance reservation applicants and on-site visitors

Jeonnam Wando Maritime Police Station (Chief Lee Young-ho) announced on the 20th that on the 18th, it conducted a free inspection service for 11 powered water leisure vessels, including motorboats and rubber boats, at Wando New Port to prevent accidents involving powered water leisure equipment.

This free inspection targeted those who made prior reservations and on-site visitors at the New Port located in Wando-gun, Jeonnam, a major departure point for water leisure vessels. Experts from a private repair company (Daeyang Marine) conducted inspections and repairs on safety-critical components such as engine oil, fuel filters, and batteries.

In the past three years, there have been a total of 34 water leisure accidents in the jurisdiction, of which 25 cases (72%) were caused by a lack of safety awareness, such as poor maintenance and careless operation.

Accordingly, the maritime police provided safety education to water leisure vessel users on pre-departure vessel inspection methods and actions to take in case of accidents. They also conducted safety campaigns to promote voluntary reporting of nearby water leisure activities and the habitual wearing of life jackets.

This year's free inspection service is planned to be conducted twice, in the first and second halves of the year. Over the past three years, a total of 55 vessels have been inspected free of charge, receiving positive feedback from leisure activity participants and local residents as a valuable opportunity to gain professional knowledge.

A Wando Maritime Police official stated, “Since powered water leisure vessels can lead to major accidents such as collisions and capsizing in the event of engine failure or drifting, we hope that free inspections will not only prevent accidents but also help establish a safe water leisure culture.”
