Mayor Park Hyungjun: "We Will Create a Festival of Unity for Korea"
Busan City has finalized the schedule for the '106th National Sports Festival' and the '45th National Para Sports Festival', both to be held in 2025.
This marks the first time in 25 years that the National Sports Festival will be held in Busan since the 81st edition in 2000.
Taking into comprehensive consideration major domestic and international events, weather conditions, and after gathering feedback from relevant organizations and groups such as the Korea Sports Association, Korea Para Sports Association, City Office of Education, City Sports Council, and City Para Sports Council, the final dates were confirmed with the approval of the Korea (Para) Sports Association.
Prior to this, the city established and organized the 'National Sports Festival Planning Team' (headed by Kim Changsu) in February, officially launching preparations for the event. An organizing committee composed of over 140 members from civic groups, political and business circles, and media organizations has also been formed.
Busan, the hometown of Korea's first Olympic gold medalist Yang Jungmo, WBC world boxing champion Jang Junggu, the legendary iron-arm Choi Dongwon who led the Lotte Giants to their first championship, and table tennis queen Hyun Junghwa, continues to be at the heart of Korean sports history and is preparing once again to deliver an inspiring wave of emotion to the entire nation as the 'city of baseball'.
The '106th National Sports Festival' will be held over seven days from October 17 to October 23 next year, featuring 50 events at 82 venues including the Busan Asiad Main Stadium. The '45th National Para Sports Festival' will take place over six days from October 31 to November 5 next year, with 31 events at 36 venues.
With the hosting of the 'National Sports Festival' and the 'National Para Sports Festival', Korea's most prestigious and largest comprehensive sports events, it is expected that around 40,000 athletes, officials, family members, and spectators from both Korea and abroad will visit Busan, the 'global hub city'. As Korea's first international tourist city and a leading city of culture and sports, Busan's global recognition is expected to rise even further.
Mayor Park Hyungjoon stated, "Next year's National Sports Festival will be a unifying event for Korea in Busan, the 'global hub city' and 'sports paradise', and we will prepare together with the citizens of Busan." He added, "We will do our utmost to ensure that this festival provides a comfortable, safe, and inspiring experience for all participating athletes and visitors to Busan."
