Busan City Selected for 'Smart Marine Equipment Integrated Performance Certification Platform Project' Contest

200 Billion KRW Invested by 2028 to Build Ship Electromagnetic Integrated Performance Certification Center

Enables Domestic and International Type Approval and Classification Certification for SMEs, Eases Overseas Market Entry and Exports

Busan City has secured 10 billion KRW in national funding as its proposed project, "Establishment of Integrated Performance Certification Platform for Smart Ship Equipment," was finally selected in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Industrial Innovation Infrastructure Construction Project competition.

The Industrial Innovation Infrastructure Construction Project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is a program that supports technological innovation activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-sized companies by establishing shared research and development (R&D) infrastructure essential for industrial technology development.

The Ministry held the competition from March 4 to April 3, during which Busan City, in consortium with the Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering and the Korea Marine Equipment Association, planned and applied for the "Establishment of Integrated Performance Certification Platform for Smart Ship Equipment" project.

The "Establishment of Integrated Performance Certification Platform for Smart Ship Equipment" project aims to proactively respond to the paradigm shift toward "eco-friendly smart ships' electrification and electronification" driven by environmental regulations. Centered in Busan, the project will build an integrated performance certification platform for ship electronic equipment, supporting technological development, localization of parts, and testing and certification for mid-sized and small enterprises.

Specifically, starting from June this year until 2028, the city and its consortium will invest a total of 20 billion KRW (10 billion national funds, 9 billion city funds, 1 billion private investment) to construct a Ship Electromagnetic Integrated Performance Certification Center in the Mieum Industrial Complex in Gangseo-gu, which will serve as a platform to support businesses.

The Ship Electromagnetic Integrated Performance Certification Center will be linked with the existing Ship Electronic Equipment Testing and Certification Center (Noksan Industrial Complex) to establish an integrated testing and certification system covering traditional ship equipment to eco-friendly smart ship equipment. It will support the development of core technologies and products for eco-friendly smart ship electronics, such as the Integrated Full Electric Propulsion system (IFEP) and Smart Navigation Communication System (SNCS), help domestic companies lead the market, and provide testing, evaluation, and certification support.

The Integrated Full Electric Propulsion system (IFEP) refers to the power generation system, power conversion system, AC/DC distribution system, propulsion system, and propulsion control system.

SNCS (Smart Navigation Communication System) refers to the autonomous navigation system, integrated sensor mast, multifunction radar, and hull condition monitoring system.

With the establishment of an integrated testing and certification system, mid-sized and small companies will be able to respond to domestic and international type approvals and classification certifications, reduce testing costs and product production costs, and more easily pioneer overseas markets and exports.

In particular, as safety requirements for ship electronics are being strengthened and the range of standardized items is expanding, the establishment of an integrated performance certification center capable of flexibly responding to these changes is expected to not only meet domestic but also overseas testing and certification demands, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the ship equipment industry and leading the next-generation testing and certification market.

Mayor Park Hyungjoon stated, "Through the 'Establishment of Integrated Performance Certification Platform for Smart Ship Equipment' project, we expect to further enhance the competitiveness and productivity of the ship equipment industry, which is a strategic industry fostered by our city. The city will continue to actively support mid-sized shipyards and ship equipment companies so they can proactively respond to the paradigm shift toward digital and eco-friendly ships, and through this, Busan will be able to establish itself as the mecca of the eco-friendly smart equipment industry."
