Park Gang-su, Mapo-gu Mayor: "Unpredictable Abnormal Climate, Will Prepare More Thoroughly to Prevent Resident Damage"

Mapo-gu's Comprehensive Heatwave Measures in Full Force... Ironclad Protection Against Vulnerable Residents' Harm

As the number of heatwave days increases every year and this summer is expected to be hotter than usual, Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) will implement a comprehensive heatwave countermeasure from the 20th to September 30th to take proactive measures for a safe summer.

The Mapo-gu comprehensive heatwave countermeasure plan includes ▲establishing a real-time heatwave situation management and response system ▲focused management of heatwave-vulnerable groups ▲strengthening workplace safety management ▲expanding and enhancing management of heatwave mitigation facilities.

First, the district will form a Heatwave Situation Management TF team to manage normal situations until September 30th, and when a heatwave advisory is issued, a Heatwave Countermeasure Headquarters will be organized to manage damage status and response measures. In the event of a severe heatwave crisis, a Heatwave Disaster Safety Countermeasure Headquarters led by the Mapo-gu mayor will be formed to fully focus on disaster site response.

In particular, this year, efforts will be intensified to manage heatwave-vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone, persons with disabilities, homeless people, and residents of jjokbang (small rooms).

Social workers, life support workers, and disaster helpers will visit or call 1,828 elderly living alone and persons with disabilities every other day to check on their well-being. A homeless street patrol team will also be formed to conduct on-site patrols during heatwave advisories.

Health checks and heatwave prevention education will be conducted for target groups through visiting nurses in each neighborhood. A homeless street patrol team will also be formed to conduct on-site patrols during heatwave advisories.

Customized livelihood and medical support, as well as utility bill assistance, will be provided to low-income crisis households with less than 100% of the median income, housing-vulnerable households, and those unemployed or temporarily closed due to the heatwave.

Additionally, to ensure workplace safety, the district plans to disseminate heatwave action guidelines to outdoor workers such as construction workers and check whether rest facilities and break times are guaranteed.

Furthermore, a total of 71 shade shelters, including smart shade shelters, will be installed at pedestrian-heavy traffic islands and crosswalks, and 178 cooling shelters utilizing senior centers and welfare centers equipped with air conditioners will be operated. When a heatwave advisory is in effect, seven water sprinklers will operate along a 14.7 km section to lower the urban temperature.

The district plans to widely promote heatwave preparedness guidelines for residents and the status of local cooling shelters through Mapo TV, blogs, TVs in apartment complexes, and large supermarkets.

Park Gang-su, mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Recent abnormal climate conditions are difficult to predict in advance, so more thorough preventive measures are necessary,” and added, “We will make every effort to ensure all Mapo-gu residents can have a safe summer through comprehensive safety responses.”
