Former Gyeongnam Governor Kim Kyung-soo, who returned to Korea to attend the memorial service for the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, avoided giving a direct response regarding current domestic politics.
Kim, who is studying in the UK, responded on the afternoon of the 19th at Incheon International Airport to reporters' questions about expectations from some members of the Democratic Party of Korea for him to play a central role in the pro-Moon Jae-in faction, saying, "As I am here on a temporary visit, it is not appropriate to comment on the current political situation in Korea," he said.
Kim said, "I believe it is the duty of a politician to speak to the people about the future and hope," adding, "On the contrary, I would like to once again express my deep apologies for being someone who has caused worry and concern to the people."
He continued, "That is why I think my current position is one where I need to see more, listen more, learn more, and make more efforts."
When asked if he would visit former President Moon, Kim replied, "Since I am going to the memorial service in Bongha Village, I suppose I should pay a visit to former President Moon in Pyeongsan Village."
Regarding whether he would meet with Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, he said, "No other personal schedules have been decided yet," adding, "I just arrived, so I plan to meet and contact several people. I need to organize how to proceed."
Kim was sentenced to two years in prison for the 'Druking comment manipulation case' and was pardoned and released on December 28, 2022. He then went to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in May last year. He is barred from running for public office until December 2027.
