The Korea Racing Authority hosts the 'Horse Racing Day' event every year, bringing together related organizations to commemorate May 20, 1922, the date when horse racing was first held in Korea.
In particular, a memorial ceremony for horses is held every year on Horse Racing Day. This ceremony is dedicated to honoring the spirits of the great horses who left behind countless sweat and hoofprints on the racetrack. Instead of a pig's head, which is commonly used in traditional Korean memorials, the ritual table was set with carrots, hay bales, and mixed feed that horses enjoy.
The event was attended by around 20 horse racing officials, including Um Youngseok, head of the Busan-Gyeongnam regional headquarters of the Korea Racing Authority, and Min Jangki, president of the Busan-Gyeongnam Trainers' Association, and was conducted in a solemn atmosphere. The participants read memorial messages, laid flowers, prayed for the souls of the horses that passed away after their careers as racehorses, and wished for the safety of both racehorses and those involved in horse racing.
Um Youngseok stated, "The development of Korean horse racing and the horse industry has been possible thanks to the efforts and achievements of the racehorses," adding, "I hope for a safe racing season without any accidents this year as well."
