Hwasun County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gu Bok-gyu) announced that on the 17th, a day before the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Movement, a memorial ceremony was held at Hwasun Station Square to honor the souls who sacrificed for freedom and democracy and to reflect on the noble spirit of May.
The ceremony was organized by the Hwasun County Branch of the Jeollanam-do Chapter of the May 18 Democratic Movement Injured Veterans Association (Branch President Byun Jae-young) under the theme "May for Everyone, United May."
About 100 people attended, including Deputy Governor Kang Jong-cheol, County Council Member Kim Ji-sook, May 18 Democratic Movement merit recipients and their families, and representatives of various organizations.
The ceremony proceeded solemnly and reverently in the order of the national anthem, flower offering and incense burning, commemorative speeches for the May 18 People's Uprising, memorial speeches, and the singing of the "March for the Beloved."
Byun Jae-young, President of the Hwasun County Branch of the Jeollanam-do Chapter of the May 18 Democratic Movement Injured Veterans Association, said, "I express my deep respect to the noble spirits of May who gave their precious lives to protect democracy," and added, "It is necessary for the awakened citizens to maintain continuous interest in correctly remembering, inheriting, and developing the history of May 18."
Deputy Governor Kang Jong-cheol comforted the merit recipients and families of the May 18 Democratic Movement and promised that Hwasun County will uphold and develop the noble spirit of May in honor of the democratic spirits, and will continue to do its best to respect and support the merit recipients and their families.
