The father of the late actress Jang Jin-young (1972?2009), Jang Gil-nam, chairman of the Gyeam Scholarship Foundation, passed away on the 16th at the age of 89.

On the 17th, Yonhap News quoted the bereaved family, reporting that the late chairman suffered an accident after slipping and falling while returning from the ‘Jang Jin-young Memorial Hall’ located in Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun, Jeonbuk the previous day.

Jang Jin-young’s elder sister, Jang Jin-ee, told Yonhap News, “(Father) wanted to hold a big event for my sister’s 15th anniversary this September. Even yesterday, he went to the (Jang Jin-young) Memorial Hall to prepare for it and had the accident on his way back.”

Previously, Chairman Jang was born in 1935 in Gwangju and ran ‘Samhwa Chemical,’ a wastewater treatment supplies company in Jeonju. When his second daughter, Jang Jin-young, passed away from stomach cancer in September 2009, he donated 50 million won in scholarship funds to her alma mater (Jeonju Jungang Girls’ High School) through the vice principal who visited the funeral home. This was because Jang Jin-young had requested a scholarship be provided to her school while she was battling illness.

After establishing the Gyeam Scholarship Foundation in 2010, Chairman Jang consistently carried out scholarship projects. In January of this year, he also donated 500 million won to the Woosuk Academy Foundation.

At that time, Chairman Jang explained the reason for his philanthropy: “I want to support nurturing talented individuals according to my daughter’s wishes during her lifetime,” and “I hope for the development of Woosuk Academy, which is leading student education and contributing to the local community.” In 2011, he built the ‘Jang Jin-young Memorial Hall’ in Sayang-ri, Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun, and personally managed it.

The deceased is survived by his wife Baek Gwi-ja and daughter Jang Jin-ee. The funeral hall is set up in Special Room 301 at Jeonju Citizens Funeral Culture Center. After the funeral service at 8:30 a.m. on the 18th, he will be buried in the family burial ground in Seonyeong, Unam-myeon, Imsil-gun, Jeonbuk.

She won the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress twice and was loved as one of Korea’s representative actresses. Her last work was the 2007 drama ‘Lobbyist,’ and she passed away from stomach cancer on September 1, 2009.
