Strong Winds Blow Across Henan Province, China
100 km/h... Incidents and Accidents Reported
Severe wind-related incidents and accidents continue to occur in China. Trees have been uprooted, dozens of vehicles damaged by collapsed walls, and a pedestrian was killed when a streetlight was knocked over by strong winds.
On the 16th, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that on the 14th, winds exceeding 100 km/h swept across Henan Province in China. In some areas, localized gusts reached up to 133 km/h. These winds were more powerful than usual, causing various incidents such as entire apartment windows being torn off and walls collapsing.
On local social media (SNS), people have been sharing damage caused by the strong winds. In a video posted by a netizen, two men eating street food at a stall were swept away by a tarp as the wind blew, disappearing out of the frame without being able to take cover. Heavy metal tables were seen rolling around due to the strong winds, prompting citizens to evacuate quickly.
Local meteorological authorities speculate that the cause of the strong winds was the high temperatures soaring up to 35 degrees Celsius. The rapidly warmed air met the cold air of a cold front, causing unstable convection and resulting in powerful winds.
The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Meteorological Administration issued warnings related to strong winds across China over the weekend. Due to high temperatures and sunny weather, strong winds accompanied by rain are expected over the weekend in central and southern Hebei Province, central and western Shandong Province, and central and northern Henan Province. If this phenomenon continues, it could reduce air humidity and increase soil moisture evaporation, seriously affecting crop yields and economic development.
