Eunpyeong-gu to Implement Comprehensive Heatwave Measures in 2024

Eunpyeong-gu (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) will actively implement a comprehensive heatwave countermeasure plan to prevent casualties and facility accidents caused by the summer heatwave.

The heatwave countermeasure period will last approximately four months, from the 20th of this month to September 30th. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, this summer's temperatures are expected to be higher than average.

During the heatwave countermeasure period, Eunpyeong-gu will operate a situation management task force composed of relevant departments to carry out activities to prevent heatwave damage, including situation monitoring and heat-related illness surveillance.

Through disaster helpers and visiting nurses, the district will conduct welfare calls and health management for vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone, people with disabilities, those with mobility difficulties, and residents of disaster-prone facilities. In particular, efforts will be made to prevent casualties by operating mandatory rest periods for workers at construction sites during extreme heat.

The cooling centers, which were previously limited to welfare centers and senior citizen centers, will be expanded to include public libraries such as Eunpyeong-gu Public Library, as well as commercial facilities including Lotte Mall Eunpyeong Branch, E-Mart Eunpyeong Branch, and NC Department Store Bulgwang Branch, operating a total of 206 locations.

Additionally, 93 shade shelters installed at crosswalks and traffic islands, cooling fog systems at Bulgwangcheon Stream and two parks, and 11 smart rest shelters at bus stops will be operated continuously to reduce residents' discomfort caused by the heatwave through various measures.

Furthermore, during the peak daytime temperature hours, six major arterial roads including Eunpyeong-ro (totaling 27.8 km) will be intensively sprayed with water to prevent urban heat island effects.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, "Due to global warming, this summer is expected to arrive faster than anticipated. We will do our utmost to minimize casualties, prevent facility safety accidents, and reduce inconvenience to residents through thorough preparation and countermeasures."
