Seodaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seongheon) announced on the 16th that it recently opened the ‘Seodaemun-gu Re&Upcycle Plaza’ (Moraenae-ro 369), a hub space for resource circulation and recycling sharing culture.
The old recycling center built in 1995 was demolished and rebuilt as a building with one basement floor, four above-ground floors, and a total floor area of 1,473㎡. The goal is to spread a voluntary resource recycling culture within the local community through education, experience, and exhibitions.
The first floor of this building houses a ‘Promotion Hall’ that raises awareness of recycling and upcycling (adding design or usability to recycled items to increase their value) through various product exhibitions, and a ‘Community Room’ that operates experience programs for making upcycled products.
The second floor features an ‘Exhibition Experience Hall’ themed on waste separation and upcycling, while the third floor accommodates the ‘Seodaemun-gu Office Cleaning Administration Division,’ the department responsible for creating a resource circulation city. The fourth floor includes an ‘Education Room’ where theoretical and experiential education on resource circulation takes place, and the ‘Areum-in Library,’ sponsored by Shinhan Card. The rooftop is used as a space for various events and activities such as flea markets and environment-related exhibitions.
Mayor Lee Seongheon said, “With the opening of Seodaemun-gu Re&Upcycle Plaza, we expect increased interest and practice in waste separation, recycling, and upcycling for environmental protection and resource circulation.”
