Korean Man Sentenced to 8 Years and 4.5 Months in Prison for Attempted Sexual Assault in Singapore

A Korean man in his 50s, accused of attempting to sexually assault a neighbor in the same apartment in Singapore, was sentenced to 8 years and 4 and a half months in prison.

According to local media on the 15th, the Singapore High Court found Jo Mo (51), a Korean man known to have attempted to sexually assault a female resident at the apartment swimming pool, guilty of attempted rape and sexual harassment charges, and handed down the sentence on the 13th.

Jo returned home after a drinking session past midnight on September 9, 2022. Then, around 4:25 a.m. on the 10th, he went out to the apartment swimming pool and found a Swedish national woman in her 20s lying on a chair beside the pool.

Local media reported that Jo touched the victim, who was asleep from drinking, and when she did not wake up, he attempted to sexually assault her. The victim regained consciousness, fiercely resisted, and escaped. The next day, after reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, she reported the incident to the police.

At the time of the incident, Jo was working as an engineer at a local branch of a major Korean corporation. He had entered Singapore on a short-term stay visa. Jo’s lawyer requested a sentence of 5 years and 4 months, but a heavier sentence was imposed.

In Singapore, attempted rape can carry a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, fines, and caning. Since Jo is over 50 years old, caning was not applied.
