A post claiming that poison bait was made and placed to kill stray cats in an apartment underground parking lot has prompted animal protection groups to take urgent action.

On the 13th, the animal protection group Kara reported that a man in his 40s, Mr. A, living in Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do, posted on an online secondhand trading community on the 10th under the title "Parking Lot Cat," revealing that he had placed poison bait to kill cats.

Earlier, Mr. A wrote in the post, "The cat in the parking lot kept climbing onto my motorcycle seat and dirtying it, causing me stress," and added, "I ground (chemical substances) into powder and mixed it with cat food. I hope this guy eats it and is taken care of." He also attached photos showing something presumed to be white pills being ground into powder with a plastic mortar and sprinkled onto the food. On the parking lot wall where the bait was placed, there was a note saying, "This bait is to eliminate cats residing in the parking lot. Please do not touch."

When another community user commented, "Is this okay? If the cat eats it and becomes dazed, it could be dangerous," Mr. A retorted, "It’s not a cat but a furry cockroach (a cockroach with hair)."

Kara stated, "The abuser openly posted his animal abuse crime on the bulletin board. He used bait mixed with drugs as a tool to kill hungry animals," emphasizing, "Abusing animals through chemical means such as drugs is a clear criminal act." They added, "If you witness a suspicious person placing bait to abuse cats around the apartment complex in Gwangyang-si, please report it," and urged, "If you find animal carcasses suspected to have been poisoned, report to the police and request an autopsy."

Under the Animal Protection Act, causing an animal’s death through abuse can result in imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won.
