Busan Office of Education Moves Fences at 12 Schools During Summer Vacation to Widen School Routes

1.3 Billion Won Budget Invested... Ensuring Student Commuting Safety

Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is relocating fences and flower beds at 12 schools, including Changjin Elementary School in Sasang-gu, to secure safe school routes.

This project is part of the student safety measures for school routes that the Office of Education has been promoting since last year. It involves demolishing school fences and flower beds to expand pedestrian paths. Depending on conditions, temporary entrances may be opened, and spaces for school vehicle pick-up and drop-off can also be created.

The schools targeted for this summer vacation project are Changjin Elementary School, Jurye Girls' High School, Haksa Elementary School, Juyang Elementary School, Baeksan Elementary School, Modong Elementary School, Deokcheon Elementary School, Deokmun High School, Hakjang Middle School, Sajik Girls' Middle School, Hyehwa Girls' Middle School, and Busan Suyeong Middle School.

Among these, Haksa Elementary School in Buk-gu currently has a school route width of only 1.2 meters, so part of the fence to the left of the main gate will be demolished to create a new school entrance. Busan Suyeong Middle School in Suyeong-gu will demolish the southern fence to install a temporary entrance. Changjin Elementary School and Jurye Girls' High School in Sasang-gu will demolish flower beds and fences to create new school entrances.

The Office of Education will invest approximately 1.3 billion KRW in improving the school routes of these schools.

Starting with the relocation of the fence at Hadan Elementary School in May last year, the Office of Education completed school route improvements for five schools during summer vacation and 14 schools during winter vacation.

Among these, the improvement of the school route at Daseon Elementary School is an example of safety secured through cooperation between the Office of Education and local governments.

The entrance section of Daseon Elementary School’s school route had a narrow sidewalk adjacent to the stone wall of the church, making sidewalk expansion essential for pedestrian safety. Through cooperation among the Office of Education, Daseon Elementary School, Saha-gu, and Dadae Catholic Church, it was agreed to demolish the stone retaining wall at the church entrance and relocate the main gate. Saha-gu invested 200 million KRW to expand the pedestrian path.

The improvement of Dasong Middle School’s school route is an excellent case led by the Office of Education. The school gate was located on the left side of a sloped school route, making it difficult for drivers and others to secure visibility. The Office of Education demolished flower beds and created a pedestrian path and pedestrian entrance to establish a safe walkway.

At Geumgang Elementary School, during the reconstruction of the school building last June, the school route was also improved by widening the passage from 1.5 meters to 2.0 meters.

Ha Yoon-su, Superintendent of the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, “The Office of Education is doing its best to create safe school routes that protect children’s daily lives,” and added, “We will make every effort to secure safe school routes by establishing a close cooperative system with local governments and communities.”

Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is making every effort to ensure school safety by investing about 10 billion KRW in total, including providing 6.7 billion KRW to Busan City for school route improvements.
