Professor Shin Geon-su of the Department of Architecture at Gyeongnam National University recently received a paper award at the "2024 Annual General Meeting and Spring Academic Conference of the Architectural Institute of Korea," held at the Science and Technology Convention Center.
Professor Shin's paper, titled "A Study on the Relationship between the Street System and Land Parcels in Jinhae Urban Area," sheds light on the previously obscure development of the Jinhae Chungmu urban area in Gyeongnam. The research was based on data and studies collected during the comprehensive maintenance project of the "Jinhae Modern Historical and Cultural Space," designated as National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 820 in 2021, led by Professor Park Jin-seok of Changwon City.
The Jinhae urban area has been traditionally regarded as a naval rear city during the Japanese colonial period, simply imitating the Rising Sun Flag (Japanese Navy flag). However, through his research, Professor Shin demonstrated that the Jinhae urban area features a Western-style radial-grid road structure connecting squares and streets, as well as a systematic division of land parcels adjacent to these roads.
This clarified that the seemingly complex administrative districts of Jinhae were formed through the combination of roads and land parcels.
In his acceptance speech, Professor Shin emphasized, "While envisioning the future of cities, we must consider not only advanced technologies but also the historical context of the urban spaces in which we live."
