"Pay for Rice Later, Take Cigarettes Now"…Fraudster Targeting Only Post-Payment Marts

"Will pay upon delivery"
A took only light items like cigarettes
Police caught A after a chase

A man who exploited the 'deliver first, pay later' system at a local mart by requesting delivery of heavy items but stealing only light items such as cigarettes was caught by the police.

On the 13th, a video titled "I'll pay later. Fraudster who was hiding well caught" was uploaded on the official YouTube account of the Seoul Police. The video showed a scene from the 17th of last month at a mart in Seoul, where a man in his 40s, Mr. A, was shopping. At the checkout, Mr. A told the staff, "I will order rice, cigarettes, alcohol, etc., so please deliver them," and gave his phone number and home address. He said, "I will pay when the items are delivered," and took only light items such as cigarettes before leaving the mart.

However, it was found that both the contact number and address Mr. A provided were fake. The police, who responded to the report, identified Mr. A’s description and tracked him down, eventually spotting him on the street. Realizing the police were chasing him, Mr. A dropped the bags he was carrying and fled.

Running at high speed, Mr. A tried to evade the officers by crouching and hiding behind a truck parked in an alley. However, the police who entered the alley found Mr. A hiding and immediately arrested him.

Investigation revealed that Mr. A had been visiting marts around the Seoul metropolitan area, including Seoul and Gyeonggi, using the same method to steal goods worth approximately 940,000 won. The police arrested Mr. A on charges of fraud and sent him to the prosecution.

Netizens reacted with various comments such as "In cases like this, stores should require prepayment before delivery," "He became a criminal over a few bucks," "He should just quit smoking and drinking," and "Did he really think he wouldn’t get caught by the police?"
