Heo Kwang-su, Following Lee Jae-yong, Sixth Korean
15 Years Broadcasting The Open and AIG Women's Open
Hong Jeong-do, Vice Chairman of JoongAng Group, has been elected as a full member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) in the United Kingdom.
He is the sixth Korean to become a full member, following Huh Kwang-soo, Chairman of Samyang International; Lee Jae-yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics; Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group; Park Ji-won, Chairman of Doosan Group; and Koo Ja-yong, Chairman of E1. The R&A, established in 1754, is the oldest golf club in the world. It is located in St Andrews, Scotland. In 1834, it received the title "R&A" from the British monarchy. Recently, King Charles III of the United Kingdom became the club’s patron, succeeding the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The R&A is the leading organization that systematizes and develops the rules, etiquette, and equipment regulations for golf worldwide. It has been the organizer of The Open Championship, the world’s premier major golf tournament. Full membership in the R&A is granted through a rigorous qualification process to individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of the golf sports industry. Currently, only about 2,500 influential figures in the global golf community are members.
Vice Chairman Hong’s connection with the R&A began through broadcasting. Since 2010, JTBC Golf and JTBC have been broadcasting the men’s and women’s major tournaments hosted by the R&A, including The Open Championship and the AIG Women’s Open. JTBC Golf will broadcast the 152nd Open Championship held on July 18 at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland and the AIG Women’s Open held on August 22 in St Andrews, Scotland.
