Gojong's Fifth Son's Spirit of Independence Movement Revealed

Cultural Heritage Administration Hosts Special Exhibition 'Gukbong' at Deokdeokjeon, Deoksugung
Featuring Calligraphy of Independence Activists and Portrait of Yun Bong-gil

The artifacts of independence activists collected by the Cultural Heritage National Trust and Riot Games are unveiled. This is through the special exhibition "Gukbong (國奉) - Devoted to the Nation, a Heart Filled with Passion," held by the Cultural Heritage Administration from the 13th at Dondeokjeon, Deoksugung Palace. Twenty-one pieces, including calligraphy (writings or paintings left during their lifetime) and portraits, are on display.

The exhibition was organized to inspire the values of the independence movement and the spirit of patriotism. It introduces calligraphy by independence activists and a portrait of Yun Bong-gil. The most eye-catching calligraphy pieces are "Gawunsuseong (可雲修省 - to calm the mind and reflect)" and "Jongo Soho (從吾所好 - I will pursue what I love)." The former was written by Uichinwang, the fifth son of King Gojong, and the latter by Kim Gajin, a late Joseon diplomat who was also famous as a calligrapher.

The Cultural Heritage National Trust, which discovered these artifacts, is a special corporation established through voluntary participation from the private sector. It acquires cultural heritage through donations, gifts, and consignment from individuals, companies, and organizations.

This year, it is promoting projects such as the cultural heritage cataloging project (Chungbuk), the creation of a cultural space at poet Lee Sang's house (Jongno-gu, Seoul), and an international academic conference on social contribution of national heritage. Additionally, it operates exhibition, lodging, and cultural facilities at Boseong Inn (Boseong, Jeonnam), Ulleung History and Culture Experience Center (Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk), Munhwagonggam Sujeong (Dong-gu, Busan), Sodaeheon and Hoyeonjae old houses (Daedeok-gu, Daejeon), and Yun Gyeongryeol old house (Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk).
